Coloring Beer Tank

The final beer color can be adjusted by adding caramel to the beer. The caramel can be added to ensure finished product color consistency or to target a darker color without significantly adding to the beer’s calories or gravity.

Beer and wort color traditionally have been measured visually, and early on the Lovibond (degL) scale was adopted as a standard. Photometric methods have replaced visual comparison. The American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC) has developed a Standard Reference Method (SRM), whereas in Europe the European Brewery Convention (EBC) has defined a photometric determination at 430 nm.
